Travel planning for March: Recommendations for nomads and slow travelers 40+ seeking quality stays, reliable wifi, and community you can opt in or out of — with the context you need for each region.
On the ninth of March, four million people on one island stop moving at the same time.
No flights in or out of Bali for twenty-four hours. No mobile network. Nobody outdoors. Nyepi is one of the more extraordinary things you can be present for, and one of the worst things to unexpectedly land in the middle of.
Eid al-Fitr lands right behind it, and in Indonesia that means March 10 and 11 — the busiest domestic travel days of the year everywhere that isn't Bali.
March 2027 is stacked like that. Easter lands on the 28th, about as early as it gets, so Semana Santa falls inside the month rather than safely into April. Ramadan ends around the 9th, a day earlier in North Africa and the Gulf than in Indonesia. Las Fallas takes Valencia from the 15th, which is also Clean Monday in Greece. Holi is the 22nd and 23rd. The Vendimia takes Mendoza the first weekend.
So for this month, when your booking starts matters as much as where you go. A stay running March 1 to 31 in Spain ends in the most expensive week of the Spanish year. One starting March 15 in Zanzibar walks into the long rains. Same place, same money, a completely different month.
It cuts both ways, though, and knowing those sweet spots for dates in each region will help you spot the deals. Around $1,100 this month buys a studio and a month’s residency in the Blue Mountains, or a private room with three meals a day on a 242-acre reforestation property in the Colombian Andes, or a house an hour from Barcelona where the entire month runs in Spanish.
For each region below, you’ll find two useful things:
First, what’s actually happening there in March: the weather, the festivals, the closures, the air quality, the things that would put you off a place if you only found out after you’d paid.
Then the specific stays I’d send a friend to, with real prices, the honest catches, and what to ask before you book.
I’d rather you skip something on this list than arrive somewhere disappointed.
Europe first, then Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, North and Central America and the Caribbean, and South America last.

Europe: Decent Rates and Spring Temps With Interesting Program Options
March is when southern Europe starts feeling like itself again. Temperatures are rising, daylight comes back quickly, and the prices haven't caught up yet.
One date shapes the whole month this year. Easter falls on March 28, about as early as it gets, which puts Semana Santa on March 21 to 28. If you book March 1 to 31 in Spain, your last week is the most expensive week of the Spanish year, with hotels in Seville, Málaga and Granada sold out months ahead and city centres closed to traffic while the processions pass. Worth knowing rather than worrying about. Mostly it means booking early, and thinking about where you’d like to be on Palm Sunday.
You might be looking at Spain because it’s the reliable one, and you’re right about the weather. Málaga runs 18 to 20°C and climbs through the month, rain falls about one day in six, and you gain an hour of daylight by the 31st. Seville in orange blossom season is one of the best things about March and almost nobody plans for it. Andalusia is also where Holy Week is most intense, so if that’s where you’re headed, book now.
Catalonia is the other way to do a Spanish month: Semana Santa is much lighter there, mostly a long weekend, and the countryside within an hour of Barcelona stays functional straight through.
If the Algarve is on your list, this is when it’s cheapest and emptiest without being cold. Around 18°C, almond blossom inland, 52mm of rain spread thinly across a dozen days. Lagos and Tavira both hold up for a month, though the Atlantic is still cold enough that you’ll be walking the beach rather than swimming off it.
Greece, Cyprus and Türkiye sit outside all of it. Greece and Cyprus are on the Orthodox calendar, so Easter is May 2 and Holy Week isn’t a March problem in either. Greece gives you Apokries carnival and Clean Monday on the 15th, a national holiday of seafood and kite flying. If you want to stay outside of Athens, look at Thessaloniki or the Peloponnese. Cyprus runs a little warmer at 17 to 19°C and dries out as the month goes on. Türkiye comes out of Ramadan on March 8, with Eid on the 9th and 10th, with the Antalya coast warming while still in off-season pricing.
Two things for your radar before you book. Las Fallas takes over Valencia from March 15 to 19, one of the great spectacles in Europe and also fireworks at two in the morning for days. And Bansko, still in ski season, is still priced for skiers.
A masia in the Catalan countryside, under an hour by direct train from Barcelona, running as a coliving for about twelve people. The intermediate Spanish immersion month runs March 4 to April 5, which puts you in Catalonia rather than Andalusia over Semana Santa.
The programme includes weekly classes and practice sessions with a team of native speakers, and a level assessment at each end of the month. Over 100 Mbps down across the house and garden, 24/7 coworking, a gym and a natural pool. Day-to-day life in the house runs in Spanish.
Rates start at €990 for a single bed in a shared room for 32 nights, with privates available if you book in time. Meals and day trips are split between residents on top.
