Great source of the facts... I'm gonna be passing this on to a few people.
It's funny how you just know your gut that you have to get out, even before you can explain exactly why. I've felt that my country is burning down around me for nearly a decade now. and this, last 18 months has made it feel like somebody's been fanning the flames with the exhaust from an airplane engine. I had already determined that I was going to leave... And I'm glad I had to head start on it before now... This is not the country I was born in. And I can no longer support what is going on here by being here.
Thank you, Pamela — and yes, please pass it along. That gut-knowing piece is something I keep coming back to. The people in the historical record who left early almost always describe it the same way: they couldn't yet articulate what they were seeing, but their body had already decided. The articulation comes later, usually after they're somewhere they can think clearly.
I'm glad you gave yourself the head start. That matters more than people realize… the early movers always have more options than the ones who wait until the decision feels obvious to everyone.
Thinking about it, it's probably been even more than 10 years. I remember in the early 2000s posting on Facebook that my country is going down the same route as every other empire has... Overuse/abuse of the land, overextension of the military, widening gaps between the haves and have-nots. It has boggled my mind that so many people don't see that. And it feels like we are in the final stages of empire collapse. My country has one of two ways to go right now... One could be a reset, like we had after WWII, the other direction will be total collapse. And I fear that it's going to be the latter. What's really sad is that we were actually going in the right direction for it to have been the former up until 10 years ago. And I don't know if we can come back from that.
You are so right, and it's been terrible to watch from north of you in Canada, too. I have to keep reminding myself... we had a really good run, and that's unusual when you look at geopolitical history worldwide. Borders, human rights and laws are constantly shifting and being tested, and many of us just hadn't seen it for ourselves in ways that really landed for us until more recently. We've tried to be hopeful, too. But I don't think it's pessimism to accept the reality of this... the collapse is much further along than many want to acknowledge, as you've said. We can still hope for the best, but it is indeed time to accept that the worst is a real possibility. <3
