Thai missions began tightening the Destination Thailand Visa on Aug. 31, ending the common practice of applying at whichever Thai mission was cheapest or fastest to reach and adding a criminal record check to the file.
At the posts that have adopted the change, applicants must apply through a Thai embassy or consulate in a country where they hold permanent residence.
The Royal Thai Embassy in London, whose DTV page carries an Aug. 31 update date, requires “proof of permanent residence in the UK, Ireland, or the British Overseas Territories” and a “police clearance certificate issued within 6 months from the date of submission.”
The London catchment covers three jurisdictions, not one, which is worth checking before assuming your own mission reads it the same way.
The rest of the London requirements currently read: financial evidence of “no less than £12,000 (500,000 THB),” a £300 fee, five-year validity with multiple entries, and 180 days of stay per entry, extendable once by up to 180 days. The visa’s three categories — remote worker, Thai soft-power activity, and spouse or child under 20 of a holder — also stand.
Secondhand reports say the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane has told applicants who submitted and paid before Aug. 31 that they are not affected. That notice does not appear on the embassy's own site. Visas already validly issued are unaffected.
Other posts have not moved. The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra's DTV page still carries an October 2024 update date and mentions neither requirement, and country-by-country trackers covering 40-plus missions list neither. Anyone applying outside the UK should check their own mission's page rather than assume.
Status: In force as of Aug. 31. Midlife Nomads was unable to locate a Ministry of Foreign Affairs circular announcing this. The change is appearing mission by mission — London, Vientiane and the consulate-general in Savannakhet among the first — which means the wording, and possibly the strictness, may differ by post.
For anyone who planned to convert to a DTV mid-trip, the arithmetic just changed. The Vientiane and Savannakhet run, long the standard workaround for someone already in Thailand on a tourist entry, appears to be closed.
The application now has to be built around a trip home, which for a reader on a six-month Chiang Mai plan means either applying before departure or budgeting a flight back.
Order the police certificate early but not too early. Processing times vary widely — ACRO in the United Kingdom, the RCMP in Canada, the FBI Identity History Summary in the United States — and the certificate expires for these purposes six months after issue, so there is a window on both ends.
Whether every Thai mission is applying the same rule from the same date, and whether a consolidated national notice will follow, remain to be seen.
