If you are booking positioning flights for a European winter base, there is nothing in Ryanair’s performance announcement this morning that says you need to rush to book now.
Fares are trending modestly down this quarter, and the airline expects another profitable year.
However, if you are sketching out a summer or autumn 2027 stretch across Europe, that could be a different story. Ryanair is warning that short-haul fares will rise materially if oil stays where it is, making refundable earlier bookings a reasonable hedge.
Here’s what the airline actually said:
It cut its full-year traffic target from 216 million to 214 million passengers and will hold November-to-March capacity broadly flat rather than grow it.
Ryanair bought most of what it needs for the year in advance at around $67, so it's insulated on roughly 80 percent of it. The rest it has to buy at today's price (about $140 a barrel), and winter is already the stretch where it loses money.
Trimming two million seats is expected to reduce those winter losses by €70 million to €100 million.
The cut is aimed at winter only. Ryanair still expects to fly more people next summer than it did this one, and it isn’t touching that part of the schedule. Its planes were 96 percent full in August, which is about as full as they get. It’s a fuel decision, not a demand problem.
The capacity plan is in force. The fare warning is guidance about next summer, and Ryanair says a further update comes with half-year results in November.
Ryanair also said some smaller European airlines may not survive the winter, because they bought less cheap fuel in advance than it did. It might be right, but it’s also a company talking down its competitors.
The practical takeaway: think about who you're buying from before you book a non-refundable flight six months out.
