It's High Time for Movement, Sunshine, and Tacos
When winter and work threaten to turn you into a piece of furniture, it’s time to move on, eat well, and soak up some sun.
Hey, friends.
As much as I love being at home in Canada, winter has a way of messing with me. Not in a charming, “snowshoeing through a winter wonderland” kind of way, but more like “I’ve become part of the couch” vibes.
We’ve been in a holding pattern, waiting (and waiting…) for word that it’s time to head to Nicaragua to finalize property paperwork. It was starting to wear on me. On top of that, work has been heavy lately. I’ve been working on serious stories and client work; the kind that stick with you even when you’re off the clock.
Last week, I made the mistake of checking my step tracker. Triple digits, on average, for the last month. Yikes. Forget smoking—this whole sitting-around thing is what’ll kill you.
I want to move more. I really do. But getting myself to a gym in winter? That’s a whole thing. I know some of you love it, and honestly, I respect that. But I hate the fishbowl feeling, the unspoken competition, even just the process of getting there.
And yeah, excuses, excuses—I get it. But it’s not like my brain doesn’t know better. A couple of years ago, I wiped out on black ice and thought I’d broken my elbow. Let me tell you, as someone without disability insurance (thanks, pre-existing conditions), that really put the fear of winter in me.
Anyway, last week a friend mentioned she was headed to one of my favourite places and casually asked, “Why don’t you just grab a ticket and come?”
And you know what? That sounded a lot more fun than staring at my step tracker in shame. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself—and your work—is to get in a better headspace.

I scored a cheap flight and travel insurance,* she had already booked the shuttle, and there just happened to be a super cute studio available not far from where she and her partner are staying.
*We receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is not a recommendation to buy travel insurance. They made me say that. With that out of the way, this is the travel insurance I’ve used for 5+ years so I like to tell my friends about it.
So here I am!
