A Simpler Life, a Smarter Path & a Place to Find Your People
Explore new destination options for nomad group travel, practice now to avoid tech meltdowns on the road, and let's get honest about the highs and lows of remote work life.
✈️ Welcome to Midlife Nomads, your weekly hit of real talk, smart ideas, and helpful tools for building a location-independent life through remote work, travel, and business.
This week’s edition is all about finding your people, avoiding the lonelier pitfalls of remote life, and prepping your toolkit for working from anywhere (without the glitches and meltdowns). But first…
She’s baaack!
I spent the earlier part of this week on a remote island in Georgian Bay, Ontario, volunteering with my youngest and a few of his friends. It’s fast becoming an annual tradition for he and I, this off-grid adventure that provides a bit of a digital detox and a super-sized helping of that restorative Big Mother Nature energy I can’t seem to get enough of lately.
We were volunteer “Lighthouse Keepers,” thanks to the non-profit Friends of the Bruce District Parks, who run a program to preserve the area’s marine history and natural spaces.
Spending time in a place like that — where people once lived and worked year-round, far from convenience or crowds — always gets me thinking. About how many ways there are to live. About how much of our modern life is built on autopilot. And about how different it feels when you actually have to do the things that keep life running.

Coffee is a process, not a button. Dishes are washed by hand after every meal, with water boiled on the propane stove. Solar lights need to be charged and placed thoughtfully. The Jackery unit needs rebooting.
The routine is soothing and leaves far less time to fill with doom scrolling and worrying about things we cannot change.
It’s made me think a lot about my dad, who chose to live this kind of simpler, more hands-on life. And it reminded me how grounding it can be to step outside of the pace we’ve come to accept as normal — especially when you’re trying to make real changes.
Because when you’re rethinking the shape of your life, it helps to see other people doing the same, and to not do it alone. It also helps to explore what’s possible. Maybe off-grid living isn’t for you. Maybe co-living feels like a stretch. That’s okay.
The point isn’t to copy someone else’s blueprint; it’s to see what’s out there, to gather ideas, and to find your own version of more freedom, less grind.
Which brings me to something I’m excited to share...
🧭 Find Your People, Chart Your Path
We just launched a brand new free Facebook community called Midlife Nomads – Work From Anywhere, and it’s made for this moment.

I’ve had a lot of conversations lately with folks who feel like they’re standing at a crossroads, wondering if this is really how life is supposed to look at this stage. Maybe you’ve felt it, too.
This new space is for the big questions we can’t stop thinking about at 2 a.m.:
How do I get unstuck?
Why do I have to wait until retirement to start living my life?
Can I actually work remotely without going broke or losing my mind?
Where the heck do I even start?
If any of that sounds familiar, check it out. Our free Midlife Nomads – Work From Anywhere group is a place for all of you dreaming about more flexibility, more freedom, and maybe even a little adventure, without waiting for retirement or blowing up your life to get there.
Inside, we’re talking about:
Real ways to earn income remotely (no MLMs, no hype or hustle)
Lifestyle tweaks that open the door to location independence
Honest stories from others navigating this path
Weekly ideas and nudges to help you get started, or keep going
This isn’t a place for perfection or pressure. It’s a place for community, encouragement, and figuring it out together, one small, brave step at a time.

Now, here are a few other things that have been on my mind this week:
WeWork Isn’t Going Away Just Yet
After filing for bankruptcy last fall, WeWork’s back with a new CEO, fewer locations, and a lot less debt. The co-working giant still has a long road ahead, but for now, it’s staying in the game… and that could matter for nomads looking for flexible workspaces around the world.

Noma Collective Launches New Destinations for 2026
The digital nomad group travel coordinators at Noma have announced their destinations for the first part of 2026, and 50% of them are brand new places they’ve never offered before.
Coordinated trips like this are a great way to dip your toes in the nomad life waters, as they not only come with built-in community but the logistics of airport transfers, coworking space, accommodations, etc. are taken care of for you.

Survey: Remote Work Is Great… Until the Loneliness Hits
A new report shows what many digital nomads already know: remote work can be incredibly freeing and incredibly isolating. Over half of surveyed remote workers said they go whole weeks without leaving the house—and one in four don't speak to anyone for days.
Apologies in advance for all the ads (seriously, Newsweek? 👀), but Remote Work and Mental Health—Is Employment Trend Sparking a Crisis? is worth a read if you’ve ever felt the mental toll of solo, screen-based work.

In this latest One Step Closer, I shared the unglamorous but essential step I wish I’d taken before trying to work from a remote rental in Nicaragua (spoiler: no signal, no cafés, and a looming deadline). Before you pack a bag or book a flight, make sure your tech toolkit is ready for the road.
