Carving and Gargoyles, My Son Temple, Vietnam

Throughout my travels I have seen many different cultures and religions. I have seen temples, churches, cathedrals, mosques, abbeys and basilicas of all shapes and sizes, from the smallest to the grandest. Most, not all are adorned with either gargoyles, chimeras, statues, carvings or paintings of fantastic mythical grotesque looking figures.

These figures are generally thought to help ward off evil spirits. It has always struck me as a kind of strange thing to do. For me it’s almost like a welcoming committee for the demons and are actually in fact more likely to scare off the parishioners from entering.
