The many coloured houses of Burano, Italy

Burano is a small island close to Venice. Purchase a 24 hour pass from any tobacconist shop and jump on a Vaporetto water ferry and spend the day wandering around. Brightly coloured buildings line each side of the canals with small fishing boats tie up in front, just like cars would be parked in the street.

When in Burano make sure you visit the leaning bell tower of San Martino Church, how hasn’t it fallen down?

On your way back you can stop off on the island of Murano and see its famous glass making artisans at work in their factories and shops. After that stay on the last ferry and do a twilight ride right around Venice and through many of its canals.

It’s a great day out and a relatively cheap way to see this wonderful city and its neighbouring islands.
